How to calculate VAT in Austria

To add tax, multiply the price before tax by 20% and add it on. To find the price before tax inside a total, divide the total by 1.2. Taking 20% off the total gives the wrong answer, because the tax was charged on the smaller pre-tax price.

Tax = Price × 20 ÷ 100 Price before tax = Total ÷ 1.2

Price before tax€250.00
VAT at 20%€50.00
Total€300.00
A total of €600.00 includes tax of€100.00
…so the price before tax was€500.00

Standard and reduced VAT rates in Austria

Most goods and services in Austria are taxed at the 20% standard rate. The reduced rates (13%, 10% and 4.9%) apply only to goods and services that Austria's law lists, so check which rate applies to what you sell before you invoice.

VAT on your invoices

A VAT invoice usually shows your VAT registration number, the net price, the VAT rate and amount for each line, and the gross total. Business customers use it to reclaim the VAT they paid. Our invoice generator adds the tax line for you.

Selling online to customers in other EU countries

When a business in the EU sells goods or digital services to consumers in other EU countries, a single EU-wide threshold of €10,000 a year applies. Below it, you can charge your home country's VAT. Above it, you charge the VAT rate of each customer's country, and can report it all through the EU One-Stop Shop (OSS) instead of registering in every country. Sales to Austria from another EU country above the threshold use Austria's rates shown above.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Austria?

The standard rate is 20%. Reduced rates of 13%, 10% and 4.9% apply to some goods and services.

How do I calculate VAT in Austria?

Multiply the price before tax by 20%. On €100.00, the tax is €20.00 and the total is €120.00.

How do I remove VAT from a total in Austria?

Divide the total by 1.2. On €120.00, that gives €100.00 before tax. Do not take 20% off the total: that gives €96.00, which is wrong.

Do I have to charge VAT in Austria?

Businesses registered for VAT in Austria charge it on taxable sales. Registration thresholds, exemptions and rules for cross-border sales are set by Austria's tax authority, so check them before you invoice.
